Of all superheroes ever to roam the face of popular culture, Batman is by far my favourite. It's very important that a movie about him does justice to what he is. Batman (1989)does succeed at doing that, though only to some extent. The action is exhilarating, the characters are gripping and when Keaton first identifies himself as Batman, the sensation is simply bone-chilling. The story is a primal but thought-through Batman vs. Joker battle. The latter, brilliantly performed by Jack Nicholson, gives a whole new demension to the ancient character. However, I do feel the need to note that the plot doesn't spend much time on the inner tempers of either of the main characters. Bruce Wayne's pain and Batman being his way of coping are barely visible. Joker is often left unexplained, but in this interpretation a bit more motive than an urge for attention would give him more depth.

The plot in Batman mainly concerns Batman. It starts with the legendary shooting of his parents, this time not by Joe Chill, but a for now unknown mobster. Then the current situation in Gotham City is shown. Crime and injustice rule the streets and gang lord Grissom holds the throne. However, due to recent efforts by the authority, he could be pinned to a crooked chemicals manufactor. He sends his over-ambitious right-hand, Jack Napier, to destroy the evidence. The job turns out to be a set-up, and Napier ends up in a vat of toxic chemicals. After a botched surgery, he reappears as the villain we've all come to fear and love. He proceeds to wreak havoc and extract his revenge on all he believes have wronged him in a crusade for recognition. It's up to Batman to thwart his schemes to disfigure all of Gotham's denizens to his image. Batman finds out Joker is the crook who shot his parents years ago. Joker in turn learns of Batman's interest in the reporter, Vicki Vale, and takes her hostage in a bell tower, where he intends to marry her. Batman takes the bait and in the ensuing battle, Napier is unfortunately killed. Hahahahahahahahaha.
