New type of blog

As you may have noticed, depending on how much you read this blog, I've been away for a while. I thought Tumblr would be a nice alternative, but I found it's so easy to reblog things that I don't really post anything original anymore. I then decided to go back to my roots and restart my Blogspot account. There are some changes though:

1. I'm going to write reviews of films more detailed.
2. I'm going to blog about serious subjects as well.
3. I'm not going to do any challenges anymore.
4. I won't capitalize every word in the title of a post anymore, because that's stupid.

I hope you like it!

Ice Age Review

IMDb Rating: 7.5
Rotten Tomatoes Rating: 77%
Notable Cast/Crewmembers: Ray Romano, Denis Leary, Jack Black, Josh Hamilton, Chris Wedge
Genre: Animation

A little predictable, but that's OK because it's a children's movie.
_____
Sid, a sloth who is left behind by his family and Manny, a mammoth who'd rather be on his own, find a human baby. They decide that it would be cruel to leave him behind, so they start searching for his family. They are being guided by a sabertooth who is not really dependable.
_____
I have always loved this movie and continue to do so. The animation is not spectacular, and neither is the story, but it's extremely funny (for both slapstick lovers and pun lovers this is a must see) and also a bit touching. Too bad the franchise has been milked to the bone.
_____
[passing a Stonehenge-like structure
Manfred: Modern architecture. It'll never last.

A song that you wish you could play.

-Out Of The Game by Rufus Wainwright. It's a great song and I can sing it, so it would be ideal if I could play it as well.

Bridget Jones' Diary Review

IMDb Rating: 6.7
Rotten Tomatoes Rating: 80%
Notable Cast/Crewmembers: Renée Zellweger, Hugh Grant, Colin Firth, Shirley Henderson, Jim Broadbent, Gemma Jones, Richard Curtis, Andrew Davies
Genre: Romantic comedy

Extremely funny and very English.
_____
Bridget Jones is a single secretary. That is, until she gets a relationship with her boss, a known womanizer. They break up, but her boss wants her back, and meanwhile Bridget fancies a stuck-up lawyer called Mark Darcy.
_____
This movie may not be great in the technical sense: it doesn't have great special effects, the story isn't very realistic and it is certainly not a revolutionary film. It does, however, do a great job in terms of entertainment. The acting is very realistic (as far as it can be, with a story like this), especially the character of Bridget Jones. In fact, every movie I've watched with Renée Zellweger is ruined for me, because I keep seeing Bridget Jones. The story is funny in a very British way: clever jokes, that one could make in real life.
I think it's a modern classic in the comedy section.

_____
Shazzer: Fuck 'em. Fuck the lot of 'em. Tell 'em they can stick fucking Leevis up their fucking asses.
Bridget: [narrating] Shazzer. Journalist. Likes to say "fuck."

Toy Story Review

IMDb Rating: 8.3
Rotten Tomatoes Rating: 100% on the Tomatometer, rated 81% by aundiences
Notable Cast/Crewmembers: Tom Hanks, Tim Allen, Joss Whedon
Genre: Animation

Nice for children, but I think it's a bit overrated.
_____
Woody, a toy cowboy, is his owner Andy's favourite toy. At least, until Andy's birthday comes round and he gets the new Buzz Lightyear toy. Buzz soon becomes the most popular among the other toys and is also Andy's favourite. Woody feels rejected and tries...OK, I'm going to stop the summary here. Who am I kidding, EVERYBODY knows what this movie is about. On to my opinion.
_____

As I said, I think it's a bit overrated. Not because I think it's bad as a movie, au contraire. It was revolutionairy because of the animation, and I think that is the only reason you need to see this movie. Unfortunately, the majority of yaysayers go on about the story, which I don't think was very original. It is a nice idea, living toys, but in my opinion it didn't work out the way it could've. They use a lot of deus ex machinas (dei ex machinae? I don't know) and there are very few jokes. It is overly moralistic, which is annoying when you're watching, because it seems like you're getting a lecture all the time. However, for kids this is a nice and sometimes scary story to watch. I would recommend it.

The Chatterley Affair Review

IMDb Rating: 7.4
Rotten Tomatoes Rating: 61%
Notable Cast/Crewmembers: Rafe Spall, Louise Delamere, Mary Healey, David Tennant
Genre: Docudrama, Romance

The Chatterley Affair is a pretty movie, which accurately describes one of history's most infamous trials and a compelling romantic affair.
____
The true story of the 1960's trial against the publisher Penguin Books for releasing the book Lady Chatterley's Lover. The charges against the book were that it is in violation of the Obscene Publications Act, because of the explicit scenes and the allegedly vulgar words. The prosecution relies heavily on quotations from the novel, so, in order to create a balanced view, the jury is required to read the entire book. One of the jurors, Keith is not physically satisfied in his marriage. During jury duty, he meets the attractive Helena, who is practically the opposite of his current wife. While they read the novel, the contents and initial chemistry draw them closer together, until finally they decide to start an affair and do all the things Lady Chatterley and the huntsman do in book named after her. The scope is widened to completion by very occasional comments by the actual lovers, Keith and Helena. Through the sexual journey of both the lovers in the book and the film and the testimonies of the expert witnesses called by the defense the viewer gains a new perspective about sex, the true beauty and pureness of it.
____
Personally, I loved watching the Chatterley Affair. It is a stylishly executed production. While it gives an accurate record of true events, it never fails to remain entertaining. The trial is depicted in a seemingly accurate and comical manner. But it's more than an amusing documentary. Much more. From today's perspective, you really want the defense to win. I did, because I think obscenity is not a crime. However, along the way, I also came to realize that this novel 'littered' with four-letter-words, is not actually obscene. The Obscene Publications Act's legitimacy is not doubted throughout the process. Lady Chatterley's Lover describes passionate love and seeks to redeem these 'gutter words' to their original, untainted nature. At the same time, the jurors also gain these insights. At the risk of my getting pretentious, I would say it seems to me that the trial and the affair between Keith and Helena symbolize the rational and emotional redemptions of sex respectively. They show that love and sex are not only, as I previously thought, inseperably connected, but, in fact, the very same thing. As one of the few movies that has actually taught me a valuable lesson, without being moralistic. This is definitely one of my favourite films.
